Deciding to separate is often harder than anything that comes after it. These first steps keep your options open and your stress lower.

1. Write down what you know

List your income, the main bills, the accounts you know about and the children’s weekly routine. It doesn’t need to be perfect.

2. Don’t move out in a hurry

Where you live can affect arrangements for the home and the children. If you feel unsafe, leave and call 911 or a local helpline first; otherwise, talk to a lawyer before moving.

3. Keep conversations about the children, not the past

Short, practical messages help everyone. Save the bigger conversations for mediation or counsel.
